<description>The Sound of Lights When Dim is a sumptuous unfolding ride towards a fading horizon. As with Eno’s finest moments and Sylvian’s ambient explorations, this work manages to dissolve its temporal markers and speak about moments removed from time. It talks to the delicious flaws of memory and feeling whilst never sullying itself with literality or simple documentation.

<description>From the outset The Slow and Steady Winter sets itself up to be an epic. Clocking in at over an hour long and comprising of only eight tracks the album paints its majestic landscapes with both measure and purpose, unfolding a sound that moves from immersive ambient evocations to beatific bliss rock.

The Slow and Steady Winter is not concerned with singularity but rather the totality of experience. The album is a gorgeously choreographed chronicle of a Spokane winter from the ice covered fields of ‘The Early Stages of Decline’ to the thawed warm edges of spring in ‘February Sun’. The album serves as a wonderful progression from Slow Dancing Society’s previous work both in sound and mood. In part it presents a much darker vision while still radiating an ineffable sense of humanity and heart.

The Slow and Steady Winter is the eagerly anticipated follow up to the critically acclaimed debut album The Sound of Lights When Dim also available through Hidden Shoal Recordings.

<description>From the opening strains of ‘Emmanuelle’, Monocle immediately set about wrapping you up in a blanket of dizzying hypnotic pop. Moving from bossa fuelled dark night car rides to lush shoegaze tinged astral rock, Monocle’s first full-length, Outer Sunset reflects a decidedly edgier, denser approach both compositionally and performance-wise than their debut EP.

Tracks such as ‘Music of Space’ and ‘Airphase’ present some of the best newgaze pop you will hear this year leaving behind the often overbearing austerity and replacing it with an innate melancholic warmth and energy. ‘Agent Earle’ kicks off in what initially feels like parody but in true Monocle style turns itself on its head with dark chiming guitars and warning vocals only to then perform a third chameleon act slipping the listener into a blurred star belt.

Where on first listen it may be easy to finger reference points such as Stereolab, Can and Lush when describing Monocle’s sound and musical vision, successive listens reveal much more. With a charming immediacy that belies its underlying complexity Monocle have produced a masterpiece of magnetic pop. As the last track fades you find yourself immediately reaching over to the play button for another round.

      <description>

A twenty-first-century update of the sublime shoegaze sounds of Ride, My Majestic Star’s new single carries the listener across an expansive guitarscape with its distinctive bass-driven groove. ‘and having a reason why’ is a vertiginous wall of sound, suspended aloft with updrafts of delay and reverb and, for the first time on a My Majestic Star release, Chris Mason’s heavenly vocals. This is dance music for sleepwalkers and dreamers.

The single will be available for free download until the release of the new My Majestic Star album Too Late, The Day on the 26th of August, 2008.

<description>As its name imbues The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky is a folding in of normally separated elements into a single exquisite composite. The album manages to distill the core elements of chamber pop, folk, indie pop and rock and pours the result into a whole new shape.

With intricate, complex melodies woven into impeccable arrangements Iretsu have managed to paradoxically create an album that is both stripped back and at the same time bursting with an undeniable energy and complexity. All within one track minimal pop suddenly breaks out into an anthemic hook laiden epic with strings cartwheeling over biting guitars, arpeggiated banjos and male/female chorales. The album is a masterful example of the band’s progessive avant-world music and signature experimental pop sound.

<description>Following on from the ice-sculpted cinematics of the critically praised The Slow and Steady Winter, ‘A Warm Glow’ is the perfect introduction to Drew Sullivan’s (aka Slow Dancing Society) latest opus, Priest Lake Circa ’88. ‘A Warm Glow’ finds Sullivan issuing forth waves of radiant synth drones and glistening guitars that ripple effortlessly across its sonic vista. As always, Sullivan manages to weave an intrinsically complex emotional spine through the track’s near eight minutes. ‘A Warm Glow’ speaks of both departure and eventual return and perhaps in its broadest sense the notion of “home”. Above all this is music to bathe in: warm, steamy and all-encompassing.

<description>Following on from the ice-sculpted cinematics of the critically praised The Slow and Steady Winter, Priest Lake Circa ’88 is Drew Sullivan’s finest work to date. In essence, it is the second part of a double album that began with The Slow and Steady Winter, acting as a long-distance conclusion to the double album’s narrative arc.

Priest Lake Circa ’88 exudes restraint and repose, yet is so richly melodic and full. While the album draws its raw form from ambient music, post rock and even dream pop, it is masterfully crafted into something that could only ever find itself under the Slow Dancing Society moniker. The album speaks of both departure and eventual return, and perhaps in its broadest sense the notion of “home”. Above all, this is music to bathe in: warm, steamy and all-encompassing.

<description>Following on from their acclaimed The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky album, Iretsu present yet another masterful vision of what pop music can be with the release of ‘Name our Numbers, Numbers’, the first single to be taken from the EP of the same name.

“All the elements are erratic if you were to try to isolate all the parts of the song and parse out what is happening. The song is marching. The song is staggering drunk up a hill, then tumbling down the other side, tearing its jeans and getting twigs in its hair—all of this in the first minute or so, but all the ideas and directions are calculated to a sum that is decidedly un-erratic” – Mathew Nicley on ‘Name our Numbers, Numbers’

<description>Following hot on the heels of the release of the EP’s superb title track, and last year’s acclaimed album The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky, Iretsu present the addictive, serpentine pop constructions of Name our Numbers, Numbers. This essential EP represents such a wonderfully individual and engaging musical vision that descriptors which seem to fit suddenly become redundant moments later. Name our Numbers, Numbers is a masterful example of Iretsu’s signature experimental pop sound – emotionally rich, melodically and rhythmically dynamic, and deeply satisfying.

<description>‘I Waste The Sea’ is the first single to be taken from the brilliant forthcoming Slow Beings album We Know Why The Earth Moves. The song is a hook filled, inebriated anthem, continually falling towards its demise yet somehow managing to pull itself up to a defiant standing position. With lyrical references to Deleuze and knowing nods towards 90’s grunge and brit pop ‘I Waste The Sea’ typifies the wonderful duality and underlying playfulness at work within The Slow Beings music.

<description>On his sophomore release Chris Mason and his band The Implosion traverse the realms of melancholic pop, gorgeously crafted acoustica and shining newgaze rock. Restless is a masterful foray into pop music in all its varied guises.

The albums features the recently released single ‘Fast and Furious’ with its visceral growling guitars, layered rolling hooks and aching vocals. Along with the hanging ambient acoustica of &#039;Wait&#039;, the down rock viscera of the Swerverdriver&#039;esque &amp;quot; The Safety Day&amp;quot; and the gorgeous rising pop of the title track, Restless is kaleidoscopically beautiful,

<description>With his inimitable lo-fi stylings, Richardson has produced an indie-rock gem. The album’s skewed melodicism is married to an amazing sense of songcraft that reawakens the listener to the invigorating possibilities of rock ’n’ roll. With all the playful irreverence of Robert Pollard and Pavement, Evergreen sees Toby laying down 10 songs of irrepressible lo-fi stadium rock. The album features wonky fist-in-the-air anthems that blend the catchy attack of The Kinks with the bluesy skronk of Captain Beefheart, through to bent pop-fuelled love songs that wind their way into your aorta like cupid’s heartworm.

Richardson has managed to strip the skin from classic rock ’n’ roll, cover it in fur, jewels and barbed wire and ride it through a casino. The unbridled, irrepressible feel of this album is hard to deny.

<description>On their masterful debut We Know Why The Earth Moves The Slow Beings have managed to channel a range of pop and rock influences into something that is uniquely their own. Tracks such as the much loved radio single ‘I Waste The Sea’, ‘Carson Dyle’ and ‘Nil By Rote’ expose the wonderful duality and underlying playfulness at work within The Slow Beings music. Shifting from Smiths-like guitar pop to driving, hook laden indie rock through to country tinged indie pop often all within the one song, these tracks leave you in a far different musical and emotional place than you set out in.

‘(Let’s) Get (Married)’ is perfect, crafted pop with the type of warm intangible immediacy you’d expect to find on a Wrens album. Similarly ‘Yoskar-Ola Song’ exudes a kind of affected yet magnetic humanity all in the guise of gorgeous alt-country pop. The Slow Beings have an innate knack for re-inventing the edges of indie rock and pop through a reverence for its form and power, yet irreverence in its handling.

<description>Cheekbone’s agile, amorphous brand of ambient electronica is
constantly transforming, evoking the growth of nature and the decay of
light across space, agitated by human activity and the background
chatter and clang of everyday life. Yesterday expresses an aching sense of nostalgic
melancholy, pining for something that only exists as memory and
imagination. The EP&#039;s experimentation with melody and texture work to create luminous
new soundscapes evoking seminal British electronic acts such as Aphex
Twin, Plaid and Boards of Canada whilst carving its own unique space.

<description>Featuring a collaboration with Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins fame, “A Taste Of” is laden with honey coated, magisterial guitars, sweeping electronics and lush vocals. <description>With the opening strains of &#039;What Would One Become&#039; the Autumn Magnets EP opens the door to an emotionally charged landscape masterfully terra formed by the Melbourne based instrumental four piece. Lush, sweeping guitars weave themselves into a rising insistency as they interplay with drifting piano, driving basslines and powerhouse drumming. Bury the Sound’s elegant, cinematic songs continually transform themselves and develop an all too rare sense of flux and movement.

<description>“Somewhere Someone Else” is a work of muted radiance. Sounds of piano and guitar wash in and out of recognition, providing a kind of dislocated comfort. The album slowly breathes in and out with an undeniable melancholic warmth, like a sad dream you don’t want to wake from. Traversing some of the post ambient territories of peers such as Windy and Carl, The Dead Texan and Labradford, “Somewhere Someone Else” manages to carve its own unique sonic and emotional landscape.

<description>From the opening track of Wunden Gibt Es Immer Wieder Sankt Otten make their intentions known. Stephan Otten`s echoing rhodes piano falls over golden drones as Oliver Klemm drapes his elegant trademark guitar through the track like a neon waterfall. The album represents a marked progression from the bands earlier output. It draws upon the heart of their previous forays into dark melancholic trip hop yet discards the form. In doing so the band have managed to present a musical vision that is even more epic, cinematic, noirish and distinctly their own.

Over its eleven instrumental tracks the album presents such an immensely crafted and expansive landscape. From the buzzing twilight halo of &#039;Taschensymphonie&#039;, the magisterial lament of the title track and the urgent, dramatic ambience of &#039;Der Groove Des Guten Gewissens&#039; Wunden Gibt Es Immer Wieder is a slow burning, intensely orchestrated piece of maximalist minimalism. The albums hypnotic melancholia is undeniable as it turns lost moments into cinematic anthems. On each listen the album grows and reveals something new. This is music made for film made for music and an album only Sankt Otten could make.

The first single from the album, ‘Wunden Gibt Es Immer Wieder’ and accompanying video is also available.

<description>Wir koennen ja Freunde bleiben (Let’s Remain Friends) is a flowing cinematic patchwork that at once embraces and deconstructs the notions of genre whilst never losing sight of its warmth and totality. The album rolls elements of brooding post jazz instrumentals through, noirish Morricone’esque trip hop and ambient electronica. Beyond these ingredients,
Wir koennen ja Freunde bleiben is defined by its indelible sense of time and space as if each feature of it’s musical terrain was mapped out by a jazz cartographer.

<description>Inhabiting a soundworld demarcated by fellow sonic explorers Björk and Xiu Xiu,
Ghost In The Water transform the prosaic into the magical. Husband and wife
Nathan and Mandy Tensen-Woolery create intimate, charming electronic pop music,
suspended weightless between the twin poles of childlike enthusiasm and haunted
memories.

Tooth presents a luscious and intricate vision: a delicate yet expansive
re-working of the traditional pop format married to gorgeous interwoven
male/female vocals and an enveloping sonic canvas. These 10 intimate yet effusive
lullabies are skillfully crafted from winding strings, bubbling electronics and golden
vocals, setting up a heartbreaking duality between child-like optimism and the adult
weight of loss and longing.

<description>Born from a relationship breakup and its chaos, post overseas travel, Aerospace is a textural, introspective journey. It is an album that one
aurally emerses in. The whole album was an unplanned montage of musical
pieces. It explores the simplicityof rich, repetitive instrumental
refrains and moods, and layers them with emotive, melodic vocal lines. It doesnt try to impress the listener with clever arrangements but
draws the listener. If they wish to. It is ambience without being
ambient. It is an album of places and spaces.Their first single off the album, &amp;quot;Fairweather and the Plimsol Line&amp;quot; is out now.

<description>It’s impossible to not fall in love with this song, a wonky fist-in-the-air anthem that blends the catchy attack of The Kinks with the bluesy skronk of Captain Beefheart. In parts sounding like the B-52’s making out with Polvo in an acid filled spa, ‘Booragoon Lagoon’ is laden with warped hooks winding through beats that speak direct to your dancing parts. It is a mad collision, a rock n roll car crash at an Elvis Presley after party. Richardson has managed to strip the skin off classic rock n roll, re-cover it in fur, jewels and wire and ride it to through a casino. The unbridled and irrepressible feel of this song is hard to deny.

‘Booragoon Lagoon’ is the first single to be lifted from Toby Richardsons forthcoming full length Evergreen to be released through Hidden Shoal Recordings early 2008.

<description>The Si Begg remix of ‘The First Step to End the Life’ is a work of unstoppable melancholic euphoria. From the opening strains of The Retail Sectors woven melodic guitar riff your attention is immediately entangled and just as you attempt to unwind yourself Si Begg delivers a driving heartbeat that attaches itself to your chest as if it were your own.

‘The First Step to End the Life (Si Begg Remix)’ may be one of the catchiest, most danceabale yet musically rewarding tracks of the year. The collision of Si Beggs brilliant sense of rhythm and feel and The Retail Sectors sonic and melodic complexity make for a track that simultaneously engages the head and the body. This is My Bloody Valentine for the clubbing set.

The track is taken from the forthcoming Retail Sectors mini album, Foregone Conclusion to be released through Hidden Shoal Recording on the 4th of December, 2007.

<description>Foregone Conclusion, collects the pearls of previous Retail Sectors releases including collaborations with Si Begg, Maps and Diagrams, and Headphone Science, as well as a number of new and previously unreleased tracks.

Layering manipulated guitars, bass, drums and electronics to create compelling, melodic instrumentals, Foregone Conclusion frequently threatens to spiral out of control, yet like an exquisite train wreck holds the listener rapt. From the elegiac ‘Beauty of the Depression’ to the bit crushing Yaporigami remix of ‘The Dread’ The Retail Sectors create inventive and utterly engaging instrumental rock.

Foregone Conclusion also features the Si Begg remix of ‘The First Step to End the Life’, one of the catchiest, most danceable yet musically rewarding tracks of the year. The collision of Si Beggs innate sense of rhythm and feel and The Retail Sectors sonic and melodic complexity make for a track that talks to both head and feet simultaneously.

      <description>“You
vs Them” is The Hero Cycle at their very best. The track woos the listener with
its swinging upbeat verse whilst hiding a wonderfully epic sting in its tail
that it unleashes with undeniable power. “You vs Them” contains one of the
most, hook laiden, unwinding and dizzying rock finales you will hear this year.

The track is the first single taken from the EP, “Lakes and Ponds” to be released on January the 16th, 2007.

From the exultant indie rock joyride of &amp;quot;Breathing In&amp;quot; to the bursting pop immediacy of &amp;quot;Lovers Crime&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Lakes and Ponds&amp;quot; grabs you by the hand, tickles your palm and propels you into it&#039;s spacious and twisting trajectory. <description>‘tosleepingpeople’ is a lilting pop classic and sees Tangled Star at their inimitable best. The song layers gorgeously crafted, country tinged melancholic pop with Hallsworth’s wonderfully wry lyrical playfulness. In true Tangled Star style ‘tosleepingpeople’ has a such a gentle warmth offset by subtle yet masterful melodic shifts. Like an exquisite tapestry made of string each repeat
listen frays another thread revealing new charms and subtle complexities.

The single follows on from the bands wonderfully received first EP through Hidden Shoal Recordings It’s
Now or Later and is taken from the brilliant forthcoming EP due out in the first quarter of 2008.

<description>Our Man in Eden Hill sees Tangled Star building on their wonderfully received debut outing through Hidden Shoal, It’s Now or Later. Musically the EP toys with the frayed edges of country, pop and indie, while in part infusing a sense of space and possibility familiar to fans of the classic Dark Side of the Moon.

As with their debut EP, Our Man in Eden Hill’s surface often belies its musical and emotional interior. Through its gentle shifts and directed detours, the EP manages to make once familiar territory foreign and offset. As chief songwriter and lyricist Craig Hallsworth explains,

“If these songs are simple, they are only apparently so. To me, they are only beginning to really work when they are able to express a space of becoming... There are strange warnings and advice, mysterious imperatives and entreaties... I see the lyrics as working for and against themselves, as well as for and against the music, generating a plane of momentary, shifting affective states. There is comic desperation folded into offhand profundity. There is something depressing and defeating suddenly transformed into a rare kind of pleasure and privilege. There are secrets with nothing to hide. There is one last chance after another…”

<description>&amp;quot;It&#039;s Now or Later&amp;quot; is the first single and title track of the new mini album by Tangled Star. The track is an shifting, winding epic that digs itself into your bones and drags you around it&#039;s melancholic arc. Riding the edges of indie rock/pop and alt country it gives allegiance to none. Listen and feel.

<description>“It’s Now or Later” charts a journey across once familiar land yet through its exultant shifts and wandering detours manages to make everything feel new again. The album’s title talks to the wonderful paradox that is infused within each song both musically and lyrically. This is the apathetic’s guide to caring too much. The first single off the album, &amp;quot;It&#039;s Now or Later&amp;quot; is available now.

<description>‘Wunden gibt es immer wieder’ is a magisterial lament, an anthem for lost moments. The track kicks into life with an insistent, hypnotic beat whose empty moments are soon filled with curling strings and the heart breakingly beautiful Fripp’esque guitar work of Oliver Klemm. ‘Wunden gibt es immer wieder’ is a slow burning, instensely orchestrated piece of maximalist minimalism. This is chamber trance music.

The single is taken from the forthcoming release of the same name, available on December 11th, 2007.

The single also comes bundled with the bonus track &#039;Wandertag&#039;. Be sure to also check out the gorgeous music video for ‘Wunden gibt es immer wieder’ available here.

<description>Music video for the stunning new Sankt Otten single &#039;Wunden gibt es immer wieder&#039;. The music video was produced and directed by the brilliant German video artist
Carsten Aschmann and the Hula-Offline production company. It manages to be
every bit as beautiful and hypnotic as it’s sonic counterpart. The emotive synchronicity
between sound and vision is uncanny and once you’ve viewed the video it becomes
hard to separate the two.

<description>On their debut release through Hidden Shoal Recordings, Moongoat have produced an EP laced with a wonderfully unsettling immersion. Playing out like a planted distant memory, each track describes an unfolding atmosphere that slowly becomes whole as it fills the room like a gas.
Perhaps as an unconscious response to Eno’s experiments with music for imaginary films, this is music as film. Following in the path of modern ambient luminaries, Stars of the Lid, Moongoat work to create something larger than the drone. These compositions are deceptively complex and chart a hidden trajectory that is never quite apparent until their end.

<description>Despite its obvious mastery of the dizzying possibilities afforded by
technology, Jumpel’s debut album Samuel Jason Lies On The Beach is a work of
intense intimacy and humanity. The album serves as a testament to the
power of careful distillation and minimalism, exuding an emotional
complexity that belies its seemingly simple surface. Tracks were borne
out of discrete nocturnal recording sessions where ideas sparked from a
range of disparate sources: an old drum machine, a radio announcement,
a forgotten guitar chord. Through a process of layering and weaving,
the album began to take shape. Opaque electronic textures act like
sinew, binding themselves to piano and string melodies. The result is
an album that must be heard as a whole, yet seems to exist without a
real beginning or end.

<description>&#039;September 16th&#039; sees Glassacre at the height of their craft. The track is a tightly woven, intimately crafted piece of textured pop. Guitars coated in dark honey play against rolling drums as Chris Masons haunting vocals ring out across an altered twilight. As the song rallies to a kind of defeated triumph with the repeated vocal line “This is your stop”, everything shifts and the track takes a sharp 90 degree turn into a dark corridor. In true Glassacre style, ‘September 16th’ manages to discretely bridge together two disparate emotional landscapes leaving the listener without view of their origin.

The single release features the bonus track ‘Sanctuary’ which finds Glassacre in drug dub dream pop mode. The song slides over you like a friendly cloud as the 5/4 beat gently slips you out of kilter.

Both tracks are lifted from Glassacre’s
forthcoming full length Without Sleep to be released through Hidden
Shoal Recordings early 2008.

<description>The first single to be taken from the album Tooth , ‘Clean Sinks and Folded Laundry’ is a majestic slice of electronic pop. The track is both delicate yet expansive, uplifting yet bruised with longing. With ‘Clean Sinks and Folded Laundry’ Ghost In The Water present a luscious and intricate version of what pop music can be. Winding strings, bubbling electronics and the golden vocal tones of Mandy Tensen-Woolery create an undeniably transporting atmosphere.

In wonderful contrast the single also comes with the infectious bonus track ‘How To Draw A Ghost’, also taken from theTooth album.

<description>“Gulag! 25.9.98” is the second Hidden Shoal Recordings release by Australian ambient industrial pioneers Enargeia and the first in a series of live recordings to be released through 2006/2007 by the outfit.

The album documents a performance recorded live at the now defunct Perth performance space, The Wizbah, and gives an insight into the sprawling and intense sonic terraforming machine that is Enargeia.

<description>“Too Emotional for Maths”, is a rhythmically dense and intricately melodic piece of cinematic rock. The album constructs a flexing woven city of sound out of muscle and light. Guitars and drums seem to tumble perfectly in and out of each other leaving new shapes in their wake. The first single off the album, &amp;quot;Solo in una strada
affollata&amp;quot; is available now.

      <description>&amp;quot;Solo in una strada
affollata&amp;quot; is the first single taken from the album, “Too Emotional for Maths”. The track is a wonderful introduction to the rhythmically dense and intricately melodic cinematic rock of Dilatazione and a gorgeous musical ride in itself.

<description>With his remix of “Too Late”, Fredrik Johansson of
Glorybox has managed to distill the lush guitar based sound of Colour Kane into
a stripped back brooding nocturnal slice of melancholic electronica. Its
beat-driven orchestral movements and driving bass, layered with the gorgeous vocals
of Marjan Snykers form to create a luscious slice of downbeat atmospheric pop.

The track is taken from the forthcoming Colour Kane album, “A Taste Of”.

<description>An essential taster for the new Chris Mason album Restless, ‘Fast and Furious’ is a heartbreaking thriller from
the ground up: the insistent pulse of the drums, the visceral growl of the guitars,
layered rolling hooks and Chris’s aching vocal. As Mason sings, “He’s coming
back for us” the song&#039;s wonderfully razored balancing act between hope and a
dark sense of fatalistic urgency is exposed. This is newgazer pop with an edge.

For a limited time the single comes bundled with a bonus track
taken from the upcoming Restless album. &#039;Deer
in the Headlights&#039; plays out like a slow loss with all the dark melancholy of
Mazzy Star and the loaded cavernous spaces of Bark Psychosis.

      <description>Beautiful Lunar Landscape’s music is constructed with a cartographer’s
sense of detail and direction. The band’s songs have a natural
dynamism, shifting between all-out bliss rock to haunting ambient pop,
at times recalling the shimmering intensity of Ride or The Boo Radleys
at their respective peaks, yet managing to transport the listener
beyond the familiar.

Alone in this Dark Romantic Night propels the listener across ink-black expanses
reverberating with a wonderful sense of drama and mystery. Beautiful Lunar Landscape have created an EP that marks them as one of THE bands to watch. This is
twenty-first-century trip-rock.
